soul music 6

Let's Stay Together Today we studied another song, this time from another genre . We scanned it, and here's what we remembered: the song is entitled Let's Stay Together . / The title is ... the singer ( le chanteur/la chanteuse ) says he loves another person / he's in love with someone . he/she says they should never break up . the singer asks himself/herself why people break up, because he/she doesn't understand why they do, and he/she wants to stay with his/her love forever.  This is very probably a love song.  We also realized it was a soul music song, and that it contains three meanings. warm up late / early / mid 19th century Japanese culture to greet vs great
Follow the Drinking Gourd Today we studied another and last worksong entitled Follow The Drinking Gourd . The rhythm and the melody were simple, groovy, repetitive and slow.  With the lyrics, we understood it was about an old man walking in nature. That was meaning number one. The second meaning could be for African-American slave to identify with this man. And the third meaning was a secret code. This song really was a map for slaves to escape. Here are the hints ( les indices ): - the drinking gourd=the big dipper (la Grande Ourse) - the riverbank=follow the Mississippi - When the first quails calls=in the Winter time Warm up a coup [ku] crisis [kraisis] to bounce back 1990/ USA to become/became/become values valour

The Three Meanings Today we finished talking about Go Down, Moses ( Let My People Go ), and found out about the three meanings:  1. Religious meaning : Moses is a prophet of the Hebrews, and he tries to save his people from slavery, but Pharaoh refuses. Moses is given permission by the Lord to send punishments to Egypt. 2. Historical meaning : African-American slaves had lost almost everything in America : their culture, their language, their religion, their families and their names. But they were allowed to sing worksongs, and to go to Church on Sundays. There, they heard about the Biblical stories, like the liberation of the slaves by Moses. 3. Secret Code : Let My People Go was also used as a secret code by Harriet Tubman and other abolitionists. When they helped slaves escape, they sometimes had to leave them alone in isolated places (woods, caves, etc.) to get food or supplies. The slaves had to wait for Harriet's return. If Harriet was singing Let My Peop...

Songs of the Underground railroad 2

Warm Up Not films...  I'm best friends with More than friends Special To swear tomorrow warm up today I can speak Romain et c'est tout Harriet Tubman was an African-American woman who lived during the time of Slavery in the USA. She was called the "Black Moses." We also learnt that she worked for the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was not underground, and it wasn't a railroad : it was a secret network (organization) where black and white people helped slaves escape plantations. It was a short documentary explaining how this organization worked. These abolitionists used safehouses to defend black slaves. Harriet Tubman carried a weapon, and she used it to defend the slaves against slave-owners ( les esclavagistes ), and against the slaves who wanted to back out. Harriet Tubman was very successful in her rescue missions, so she had a bounty ( une récompense ) on her head. We also learnt that she used songs / worksongs as a way t...

It was a music sheet / a music score. We could read religious words ( Moses, a prophet... ), and also the words Negro Spiritual . At first we thought the music genre was jazz or blues, but then we said it was Gospel. We know that Gospel came from the southern States of the USA, and had African roots. We also know Gospel is sang in churches.   Homework: safehouse , bold, abolitionists , underground railroad, network, conductor, backing out
