Correction Contrôle Today we spoke about writing conclusions. Here are a few points to remember before writing an essay: Try and start by writing your conclusion . It'll help you focus when you write the bulk (le gros) of your commentary or essay, and if you write your introduction in the end, it'll be coherent with the rest. Use proper vocab and expression . Now is the time to use extraordinary words. This is the last thing the teacher is going to read before giving you a mark . Try and be concise . You don't want your conclusion to exceed a fifth of your total number of words (for 300 words, it'll be around 60 words) You can try and follow that order : 1st sentence (especially important during an oral presentation, don't hesitate to repeat the Question right there) Summary of the main points (ideally, one sentence per point) Definitive answer to the Question (make sure to get your point across) An opening (Not necessary, use with caution)   ...

Fall of the House of Usher 3

Tropes in horror movies, influence of Poe's introduction to the Fall of the House of Usher Today we compared a few movies to what we had read in the short story. The House By The Cemetary , L. Fulci, 1981 dead trees, a ghastly, gloomy manor. A character reflects in a mirror-like way. The Amityville Horror , J. Rosenberg, 1979 vacant eye-like windows (catechresis), pathetic fallacy (there is a thunderstorm, blasting in unison with the shots of the rifle) Midsommar , A. Aster, 2019 a mysterious abode in a valley, unnatural colour and shape. Opposite of pathetic fallacy, everything seems sunny and happy. The Fall of the House of Usher , R. Corman, 1960 Supposed to be an adaptation of the story, but no reflection, no moor, no precipice, and the narrrator is asking for "Ms Usher." After that, we spoke about the next few paragraphs we had to read. The plot follows that way: the narrator explains Roderick Usher and him were childhood friends, and t...

WU Pop Culture / High Culture Symbol means "carried by all" The Superman movie from 1978 is considered a classic and ushered in a new "genre" of movies : the superhero movie. Hope / not from this world, out of this world, from outer space, etc. Superman stands for America, he's the quintessential American hero, the epitome of American values. the character is thought-provoking : what's really at stake ( ce qui est vraiment en jeu ) here is his humanity. precipitous brink / tarn First paragraph: the story is simple: a man is riding his horse, alone, and arrives at the House of Usher. He describes the house, there are dead trees, everything is dark and gloomy. He goes near a moor (a big pool of water) near the house. He looks in it, and he can see the reflection of the house. Here are themes we noticed: the atmosphere is sinister ( dull, dark, soundless, ghastly, bleak, gloomy ) the setting ( décor ) is mysterious, we don't kno...

The Fall

Annabel Lee, Romanticism and Pathetic Fallacy Today we started our work on Edgar Allan Poe. We talked about the poem entitled Annabel Lee . Here are some points we evoked: - it seemed like a story that tells the lives of two characters who feel a strong love (the poet / narrator and Annabel Lee) - it's a melancholy poem, yet it's a beautiful proof of love, and he writes positive things about his love. - It sounds like a song, there's rhythm to it . - The first stanza is perfect, then the poem becomes dramatic and the stanzas change. - It's Romantic and Ideal. So here are a few of the themes from the poem: - love vs death / fear - truth / forgetfulness  - sea (=emotions of the poet) / kingdom (everyday life) We also took a look at a painting called The Wanderer Above The Sea Of Clouds  by Austrian painter Caspar David Friedrich . It illustrates the connection between Nature and the feelings of the artist, his inner life ( sa vie intérieure).  stanza ...
