Work from home 4

Is historical accuracy important in this movie? How is it achieved? - What is the role of family in this story?  - How is the figure of the witch represented ? - who's your favourite character in the movie? Why? Vous n'avez pas l'obligation d'écrire au propre ces points, ni de me les envoyer. Vous pouvez le faire si vous avez besoin d'un r...

Work from home part 2

Hello there ! I've had time to work too, just to simplify things, and make them a bit more interesting for you. Normally, you've all read the first two scenes of Macbeth. You've learned a few things... Here are possible answers for last time's questions: 1. What atmosphere does the first scene convey? The first scene introduces the witches. They are presented in a very dark, gloomy setting. They talk about curses and charms, and they stir something in a cauldron. They are evil. In scene 2, how is Macbeth portrayed? Macbeth doesn't appear in that scene, and yet he is at the centre of it. The other characters mention his bravery, his courage, and his loyalty to the King. He...

Work from home part 1

I'll give you work from here regularly, with documents and texts and papers and tests. We still should be on schedule, because we are going to finish that year, no matter what! Here's your first activity. We talked a bit about books and novels and poetry. BUT! We haven't yet talked about the most famous writer of all : W. Shakespeare. So why has Shakespeare become such an incomparable giant ? Well, let's try and see by studying some of his greatest plays. We'll start Macbeth. First, read  Act I, scene 1 , and  scene 2 . But because it is so difficult to understand, here's a  movie performance  for you, with French subtitles. After you've read / watched the scene, please t...

Of Mice & Men 11

Oral Presentation 1/2 Alien, created by Dan O'Bannon, H.R. Giger and Ridley Scott. the Necronomicon - they wanted to create a monster unlike the others. - it was created because they needed a monster that would scare people. Today we finished reading section 6, and therefore, the novel. After Lennie had killed Curley's wife, he went to the brush. There, he hallucinated and started talking with his late Aunt Clara and a gigantic rabbit. He finally met with George. One last time, he wanted to hear the story of their dream farm, and George shot him in the back.  Someone had to die .  Lennie would have died anyway. In Oedipus' story, everything, every moves of the hero is predestined, he has no choice. Right in the end, his only free action is when he blinds himself. Here, the question is: "Did George have a choice? Could he avoid killing his friend Lennie?" By the end, George knows that section 6 can be much longer than it is, that Lennie will suffe...

Of Mice & Men 10

Warm Up - Attention à <-ed> et <-s> (pluriel et 3ème pers. sing. au présent simple) the composition is the same as Picasso's Guernica to incarnate vs to embody c'est aussi l'un des rares adjectifs épithètes postposés en anglais. the devil incarnate Il existe deux origines étymologiques principales en anglais contemporain: anglo-saxone / franco-latine. Today we read the first lines of the sixth and final section. We immediately noticed that it started with a natural description that looked very similar to the beginning of section 1.  - a  deep, green pool - the Salinas river, the Gabilan Mountains - mottled sycomores - mineral and floral description first, than animals (and humans?) Why is it both end's the same? Lennie is the only one who understands the cyclical nature of what's going on. the novel is like the Salinas river, like a cycle that is inescapable (-> in Greek tragedy, Fate is also inescapable, the heroes can only be free ...

Of Mice & Men 8

Today we started by talking about our impressions on section 5. We found that the reading was easy, and that the tone differed from the first pages of the book : at first, Lennie was all nice, but he turns out to be ( il se révèle être ) a killer in the end. It wasn't expected. Were there any elements in the previous sections that could foretell ( prédire ) Lennie's evolution? - his actions are not conscientious. - G & L had to escape from their previous job because of something Lennie had done to another girl. - Lennie crushed Curley's hand. - Lennie's aggressiveness can show he's dangerous. pp. 70-71:  George yells at Lennie : "Get him," just like with an attack dog. When Lennie doesn't let go, he screams "Lennie, let go." In section 2, Lennie is said to be as "strong as a bull," that he "doesn't know any rule," and G says "don't mess with Lennie."  Curley punches Lennie mercilessly (withou...
