Oral presentations: a dream within a dream a movie that really was a dream 1951 Lewis Carroll  The Wave The scene starts with a long shot of the sea. When we get to see the characters, there are medium shots and close ups mostly ( principalement ). The sea is depicted ( described ) as primordial ( very ancient, ancient means very old ). A non-diegetic music kicks in ( starts ), and it reminds us of the tick tock of a clock. It's very calm at first. We often see through the eyes of...

Interstellar 5

The Quest for Meaning Today we completed the sheet about Murph and Cooper's library. We discovered that each and every book had some sort of a connection with the plot ( intrigue ) of the movie. It works as a library within a library, like a feedback loop (and the tesseract is basically just an illustration of this concept). We also got to the point when the main point of C. Nolan's movies is meaning. In all of his movies, there's a quest for meaning and revelation and closure. It feels very Hollywoodian, but it bigger, smarter proportions. The loss of a loved one is a tragedy, but can be turned into something positive, into an epiphany, if we can find meaning in it (early prehistoric ritual burials - enterrement ,  religious examples, happy endings, creation of foundations or associations). In Interstellar , every tragedy ends in meaning and gain and illumination. Slave Island Anvers -> Antwerp a (theatre) play / a playwright - theatre - colour GB theater - colo...

Interstellar 4

Homework correction TEST 1 (music) it's about the people who made Interstellar Right, because we can see the name of the director, C. Nolan, and music is a part of making a movie. Hans Zimmer was the composer for Interstellar. it's about the music Right. The music is unique, and it instills a feeling of suspense all mixed up with something epic. It follows the mood of the scenes (sad music with sad moments for instance). First, Nolan and Zimmer contacted each other, Nolan gave Zimmer a one page story about a father who leaves his child to do an importan job, and Zimmer came out with this very personal, intimate piece of music. it's an article, it speaks about Interstellar obviously it presents trivia about the film  Duh TEXT 2 it's about the people who made Interstellar Yes. It's about C. Nolan's career, the ranking of his movies (Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Memento, Insomnia, etc.) it's about the music No, it dealts with how muc...

Oral Presentation : Harry Potter We all know the universe of Harry Potter, its theme, and its characters. No need to tell the story.  Instead -> it's ubiquitous. Introduce a piece of trivia for the movie (part of UK gdp, or a new, modern quintessential character). Influences? Dickensian. Name dropping in Harry Potter (Nicolas Flamel). It had a huge influence on today's teenager / young adult literature. What document? an article, a quote, a still, a poster, a prop. The map hearkens back to the early days of Modern Age, with European explorers all over the place (OT maps, coastal maps, Terra Incognita, etc.). Imagination. The making of a world, the author as demiurge, Genesis. The first movie's poster -> has a 1980s vibe with the handmade drawing a la Goonies (also directed by C. Columbus). It features the main characters of the setting, it's definitely about encounters and relationships. imaginary world JK Rowling a saga Two Texts... We just h...

Intertellar 2

Basic Vocab presentation Today we started learning words to describe movies. We realised ( to realise =se rendre compte / to make =réaliser (faire quelque chose / to direct =réaliser (un film) that the way shots are made can help us talk about a movie. For instance ( for example ), there is a long shot in the beginning of Interstellar with a car going away, and a figure ( une silhouette ) stands alone. Then, a low angle close up reveals the sad, worried face of an old man, with an out of focus house in the background. It reminds us of the importance of describing first. to remind someone of something = rappeler quelque chose à quelqu'un Homework= exercise (describe shots) Bonjour! Vous trouverez ce message également sur le blog mis à votre disposition. Pour la mardi prochain, regardez Interstellar en VO sous titrée. Après votre visionnage, visitez le site IMDB pour en apprendre plus sur le film. Att...

Interstellar 1

From Photography To Reality Today we studied a still from the 2014 movie Interstellar . At first we could see lots of books in a library. It was difficult to see. Then we noticed a man in the middle of the frame (screen). He was choosing a book / looking for a book (or maybe, at the books). If we could see all these books, it would probably mean that the character is a good reader. And if we could see this man in the first image, it also probably meant he was the main character. There also was a rocking chair in the bottom left-hand corner of the picture, with a teddy on it. If it was a child's bedroom, the man could be the father of that child. Based on our observations, we guessed the movie could be linked with the theme of Encounters , because family seems pivotal (important), and this character might want to recall past memories / reminisce about his past. Finally, we considered another still from the movie ; we could see the "focal plane," where the image is in...
