SECTION 2 .../... page 36, " Lennie still stared at the doorway... " Right before that passage, Lennie has met Curley's wife, and she tried flirting with him. Lennie thinks she's "purty" (=pretty), and "admires" her. Then George scolds Lennie (il le gronde), and grabs him by the ear, and calls her a "rattrap." George tries to warn Lennie ; indeed, he believes that if Lennie lie Curley's wife too much, he might have problems with Curley. *Lennie's answer is : "I never done nothing." In the end, Lennie says he wants to leave this place: "this ain't no good place," "I wanna get outta here," Let's go George [...], it's mean here." George answers by saying they "gotta stay," that they need "a stake" (money), even if he doesn't like it either. He concludes the conversation by saying "shut up," when the other men are coming.   George also plays a...

Presentation today's presentation was about Stephen King's novella entitled The Body. It was published in 1982, and adapted into a movie in 1986. It takes place in Stephen King's favourite location, in Maine, USA, around the fictional city of Castle Rock. It's a coming of age  story about a group of teenagers who want to see a dead body, walking miles for that. They all come from dysfunctional families. there's no supernatural subplot in the novel. King invented a few cities where the action of his novels take place: Derry, Castle Rock and Jerusalem's Lot. In this, he was inspired by American author H.P. Lovecraft, who likewise wrote about imaginary places : Arkham, Dunwich, Innsmouth, and even a fictional book, the Necronomicon , written by a mad Arab in the 7th century.  the 50s as the golden age. SECTION 1, the story (p.14 - 16) Initial observations: it feels like a dream. it gives them hope. it's a story within a story. Lennie insists on : rabbits (in a cage), a garden, cream, having each other. 1: how do we enter the dream? daydreaming. " We are such stuff / As dreams are made on "  2: hope vs despair / ELPIS = waiting in Greek. Hope vs Resignation 3: Matrioshki / vertigo / storytelling / depth 4: "livin off the fatta the land!" fat of the land - > a land of milk and honey - > the Promised Land (possibility for G and L to have a house in the future). Garden (Eden?). Rabbits are in a cage (freedom?). the dream endures and is possible as long as they "have each other." 5: joy vs anger / excitement vs bitterness Some questions:  To what extent can we say G & L's future is like a Promised Land? Do the characters believe in the dream? HOMEWORK : read section 2 for next Thursday, TEST ME-> prepare topics (mo...

Poe. lost & confused / vocab is difficult, will I understand the rest of the story? The very first paragraph is a depiction of a solitary place in Steinbeck's favourite playground : the state of California. Here, we are introduced to a little "sandy bank" of the Salinas River. The words used by Steinbeck are vivid, almost poetical : the water "twinkles" and the foothills are "golden." It gives that incipit a lyrical twist ( =touch )/ This incipit has a lyrical twist to it. Steinbeck describes the scene the way a painter would, using light and colours to convey (= transmettre ) a feel...
